The knowledge of Iranians towards the new civilization of the West has started since the Safavid era. However, this knowledge has always faced ups and downs and different approaches in different periods. Western studies in Iran have mostly flowed in two forms of praise and criticism, but according to the requirements of each age, one of these two forms has been overcome. In addition to the overview of the view of some Iranians towards the West in contemporary history, the present article tries to do a detailed review of Mokhbir al-Saltaneh Hedayat's view on the above topic. This review has been based on his writings, especially the book Tohfah Mokhbiri. Mokhbir al-Saltanah, who is one of the famous men of Iran during the Qajar and Pahlavi eras, has a critical attitude towards the West, despite studying in the West and being familiar with the legacy of its new civilization. According to him, secularism, irreligion and materialism are the foundations of Western civilization, which are manifested in the form of greed and competition in the accumulation of wealth, arbitrariness in the name of freedom and unhealthy relations in the international arena. Despite these unpleasant manifestations, which are wrong to imitate for the Easterners, in his view, the West also has a laboratory that deserves to be studied.
