The nature of the Islamic city and patterns of urbanization in the Islamic world have always been one of the concerns of Orientalists. Many Orientalists, on the one hand, by denying the role of Islam in civilization, have emphasized the deep influence of Mesopotamia, Roman and Iranian cities on the cities of Islamic civilization and doubted the unique nature of these cities, and on the other hand, they examined the evolution of institutions and architecture of these cities according to the standards of European cities. In response to these theories, some Muslim historians defended the independent identity of the cities of the Islamic world and considered them to have their own characteristics. By publishing his book about Kufa, Hisham Djait reacted to the theories of Orientalist approaches regarding Islamic cities and proposed Kufa as the first Islamic city outside the Arabian Peninsula, which has been built based on the previous plan and in accordance with the coexistence of the city and the tribe. Our main question is to describe the ratio of Djait's studies on Kufa to Oriental studies and approaches regarding the Islamic city. This research will examine the relation of Djait's theory with the mentioned researches through the library method and with regard to Oriental studies about urbanization in the Islamic world. The findings of the present research show that the attention of historians such as Hisham Djait to the issue of the city and urbanization in Islam matured and expanded in reaction to the previous oriental studies in the Islamic city, which caused a kind of critical encounter with oriental studies and as a result, providing new and different answers and perspectives in the mentioned field.
