The Tarikh al-Yaʿqūbi by Ahmad ibn Abi Yaʿqūb (d. 284 AH) is among the general historical works composed using a combined method. The omission of chains of transmission (isnād), inconsistencies of some reports with narrations in other well-known contemporary sources (such as al-Maghāzī by al-Wāqidī, Al-Sīrah al-Nabawiyyah by Ibn Hishām, etc.), and with reliable later sources (such as Al-Irshād by Shaykh Mufīd, Al-Istiʿāb by Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr, etc.), as well as Yaʿqūbi’s inclusion of isolated and Shiʿi-leaning reports, make it necessary to reassess the sources and verify the authenticity of his narrations. According to the findings of this research, although most of Yaʿqūbi’s reports regarding Imam ʿAlī’s precedence in Islam (with one exception), his devotion during Layla al-Mabit, his marriage to Fatimah by God’s command, the documentation of the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, and the Hadith al-Thaqalayn are consistent with other sources and considered reliable, some narrations differ or are anomalous, with sources that are unknown and possibly influenced by his Shiʿi orientation or other unknown factors.
