Although Ibn Khaldūn was one of the great Muslim historians and thinkers of the medieval period, as well as a socio-political figure of his time, what has placed him at the center of scholarly attention and research is his philosophical and meta-historical perspectives on history and society, along with his distinctive explanation of social life—presented in the introductory section/first book of his Kitāb al-ʿIbar within an innovative discipline he termed ʿIlm al-ʿUmrān (the Science of Civilization). His theorizing in this section, despite its significance in the history of Islamic culture, is not without shortcomings or immune to criticism. Indeed, some researchers have criticized the inconsistency of the subsequent sections of the book (the other two books of al-ʿIbar) with the methodology and rules set forth in the Muqaddimah (Introduction), or his failure to adhere to what he himself had articulated. Similarly, others have questioned the stylistic disparity between the Muqaddimah and the rest of the work. However, the Egyptian scholar Maḥmūd Ismāʿīl took these critiques as a point of departure for a more radical contention, challenging the very foundations of Ibn Khaldūn's thought. He claimed that the scholarly content of the Muqaddimah / first book was fundamentally not the product of his own study, reflection, or independent thinking—nor could it have been—but rather was derived from the knowledge of his predecessors, specifically the Ikhwān al-Ṣafāʾ (the Brethren of Purity), without due acknowledgment. Consequently, he deemed Ibn Khaldūn a plagiarist. This article seeks to address, through an analytical-rational method and by employing historical data, the central question of whether the evidence advanced by Maḥmūd Ismāʿīl can substantiate his claim. Proceeding from the hypothesis that the critic's own preconceptions led him to such an assertion, this paper endeavors, through a critique of Ismāʿīl's contentions, to offer an explanation of Ibn Khaldūn's scholarly capability and intellectual originality. Although numerous works in Arabic have been written on this subject, no such study has yet appeared in Persian.
