Despite their importance in the history of jurisprudence (Islamic Fiqh) and social history, Istifta letters didn't find a specific place in the classification of Persian archives. They were rarely even recorded in the Shari'at notebooks, while they contain very important information about social, economic and even intellectual status of the society. During the Qajar period, due to structural evolutions in the theological schools (howza) and clergy system, Istifta became very important. Its importance even went beyond territorial borders. The main question of this research is How was the documental structure of Istifta letters in Qajar period? The finfings show that while Istifta letters are theoretically classified as Sharii documents, they are similar to Ikhvani (friendly) letters, by their structure.
