Among the issues in the life of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) that have drawn attention from Muslims and non-Muslims alike is the matter of polygamy. Some have regarded certain marriages of the Prophet as contentious, while others, including figures such as Ali Shariati and Keshia Ali, have presented arguments in defense of his choices. This comparative study seeks to address how these two thinkers analyzed the rationale behind the Prophet’s marriages, while critiquing their perspectives and highlighting the similarities and differences in their approaches. Findings show that both scholars, aiming to counter Orientalist critiques, position themselves as defenders of the Prophet, attributing his marriages to five overlapping motivations rooted in “non-personal” objectives—namely, political, religious, and social advancement. Shariati, for instance, emphasized the advanced age of the Prophet’s wives, their perceived lack of physical beauty, and the absence of love as evidence against claims of self-indulgence. In contrast, Keshia Ali acknowledged debates about the wives’ ages and beauty, as well as the possibility of the Prophet’s affection for them. The study concluded that certain arguments by both thinkers—particularly Shariati’s—remain unconvincing in justifying the Prophet’s marital choices and require further critical examination.
