Excommunicatuin (Takfir) was one of the problems and deviations of the Islamic world in the two spheres of thought and action. Takfir in action, in its most severe form, was manifested in the killing of those who were called Kafir. In the era of the Imams, the two movements of the Khawarij and Ghullat declared their opponents takfir and attempted to kill and eliminate them. The present study answers this main question: “What was the status of the takfir of Muslims by the Khawarij and Ghullat in the era of the presence of the Imams in the areas of thought and action, and what were their similarities and differences?” In response, using the "descriptive-analytical" and "comparative" methods, the conclusion was reached that both the Khawarij and Ghali movements in the era of the Prophet were takfiri and both theoretically and in thought considered the killing of opponents permissible; of course, in practice, in terms of scope, the Khawarij's killings were much more widespread and severe. The two also had different methods of killing their opponents: the Kharijites killed their takfiri opponents with weapons in face-to-face combat, or by ambush; but the Ghallians eliminated them completely secretly by poisoning or suffocating them.
