Zakariyyā ibn Muḥammad ibn Maḥmūd al-Anṣārī, known as Zakariyyā al-Qazwīnī (600–682 AH / 1203–1283 CE), was among the greatest geographers and natural scientists of the medieval Islamic world, possessing mastery over a wide range of disciplines of his time, including history, the natural sciences, geography, cosmology, poetry, and literature. Although al-Qazwīnī is best known for his work ʿAjāʾib al-Makhlūqāt (“The Wonders of Creation”), his Āthār al-Bilād wa Akhbār al-ʿIbād occupies a distinguished place in the field of human geography.
Despite the differences in defining historical geography and human geography—some scholars regard historical geography as an independent discipline, while others view it as a subfield of human geography—the latter primarily focuses on the spatial relationships of human activities and encompasses subfields such as population geography, historical geography, political geography, and cultural geography (including race and language). From this perspective, Āthār al-Bilād wa Akhbār al-ʿIbād serves as a significant source in human geography, as much of its content statistically corresponds to the aforementioned definition. Therefore, this study seeks, through a descriptive-analytical approach, to examine and analyze the importance of this work within the framework of human geography.
