Alter (Mihrab) is one of the important physical and spatial elements in the architecture of mosques, which has been popular in mosques since the early Islamic centuries. Despite the general idea about the formation of the altar from the Islamic era, different hypotheses have been proposed about the historical background of this spatial element. The study of the historical background and evolution of the altar in different religions shows that this spatial element is one of the holy and special places in religious buildings in different lands and has different functions and has given different names according to its function. Some documents consider the (alter) mihrab as the evolution of the spatial elements of the Mizbah or the Mihrab, which was one of the prominent points of religious buildings in the pre-Islam era, and its appearance existed in temples, synagogues, churches and many holy places. With the passage of time and the emergence of Islamic thought, this space element has a new meaningful function and appears in Islamic buildings in the form of an altar. Despite the mentioned opinion, a group of experts have considered this element to be specific to Islamic architecture and to have a clear distinction with Mizbahs and Mihrabs outside the scope of the Islamic world. This article is devoted to the research on this topic with the historical-analytical research method and based on library studies, and by examining and criticizing different points of view; considers the mihrab element as s result of the evolution of the physical and spatial elements before Islam, which was able to take a new form with the emergence of a new religion and was reflected in Islamic architecture.
