Faiz Mohammad Katib Hazara served as a court secretary and chronicler in Kabul for nearly four decades (1310–1347 AH). Through the composition of Siraj al-Tawarikh and several other significant historical works, he secured a distinguished place in the historiography of modern Afghanistan and is regarded as one of its prominent figures. Accordingly, the main question of the present study is: What are the main characteristics of Katib’s historiographical outlook, and how are they reflected in his historical writings?
Employing a descriptive analytical approach and using the conventional library method, this paper seeks to examine the above issue. The study argues that Katib’s historical thought is characterized by a Sharia-oriented, critical, and rationalist perspective, for he was both an heir to the historiographical tradition of Islamic civilization and, at the same time, a witness to the influx of modern transformations originating from the West. Hence, some scholars have referred to him as the “second Bayhaqi.”
Moreover, traces of social history and attention to subaltern groups are evident in his works. The findings reveal that religious commitment and rational analysis are fundamental components of Katib’s historiography. His writings demonstrate a critical and analytical attitude toward historical developments, as he effectively assessed and scrutinized the conduct of rulers and social classes of his time.
