The Jews of al-Andalus on the Eve of the Islamic Conquest

Abstract

This study aims to examine the historical background of the Jewish presence in Al-Andalus and to analyze their positions regarding the Islamic conquest of the region. Although the Islamic conquest of Al-Andalus and its consequences have been addressed from various perspectives by scholars, the role of Jews in the Muslim victory has received limited attention. Accordingly, the main research question is: What was the historical position and stance of the Jews of Al-Andalus toward the Islamic conquest of the region? The probable answer suggests that the Jews’ position depended on their interactions with the ruling authorities, and analyzing these interactions is key to understanding their stance toward the conquest. Using a descriptive-analytical approach and drawing on primary sources and recent studies, this research investigates both the historical background of the Jews in Al-Andalus and their attitudes toward the Islamic conquest. The findings indicate that the deprivation of many individual and social rights in the years preceding the arrival of Islam led the Jews to welcome the Muslim conquerors and collaborate with them.
