Historical analysis of the role of the press in the formation of Egyptian national identity (1882-1914)

Abstract

This study investigates the role of Egyptian print media in shaping national identity between 1882 and 1914.
It explores how political and cultural periodicals contributed to redefining the concept of the “Egyptian nation” and mobilizing anti-colonial sentiment in response to British occupation and the decline of the Ottoman Caliphate. The research analyzes press discourse as a tool for meaning-making and identity formation within colonial contexts and intellectual transformations among Egyptian elites.
Employing a historical-analytical method and critical discourse analysis, the study draws on archival sources, colonial-era publications, and writings of key figures such as Mustafa Kamil, Ahmad Lutfi al-Sayyid, Rashid Rida, and Jurji Zaydan.
Findings reveal that newspapers like Al-Liwa’, Al-Jarida, Al-Hilal, and Al-Manar played a formative role in institutionalizing national identity through historical narratives, representations of national heroes, promotion of Arabic language, and critiques of colonialism. Nonetheless, political constraints, economic pressures, and colonial censorship limited the full realization of the nation-building project.
By proposing an analytical framework, the study highlights the strategic function of media in postcolonial nation-building processes.
